POST NINE

The footpath leads into the Nature Park at this point.  Just after the barriers across the track, the footpath runs alongside the cycle track.  Keep your eyes open for bikes coming up behind!  There is another notice board beside the path, just beyond the railings.

There are a number of different tree species and wildflowers in the verges along this section: Ash, Hazel, Elder and Hawthorn trees; Cow Parsley and Common or Stinging Nettle.  Some butterflies (especially Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell) and several moth species use nettles to lay their eggs, and when the larvae hatch they feed on the plants, so they are a valuable wildlife plant.  Elder bushes produce wonderful sprays of tiny white flowers in May and June, which turn into shiny dark berries later in the year – fine food for Blackbirds!

Keep walking down the hill towards post no. 10, where the steps lead back down towards the pond.
