Working Party Feb 5th

It was another good turnout on a crisp sunny day. The main task was to prune back the fruit trees near the car park while still dormant.

This involved reducing the height so they're easier to manage in the future and of course for picking the fruit! Also cutting out dead, diseased and crossing branches to improve the air circulation and light penetration to improve the health of the trees and hopefully increase to fruit yield. come the autumn.

Another important task was to replace the missing planks in the weir. These are important control the flow of the brook by diverting some of the water along the man made leat that feeds the small pond by the weir as well as the main pond in the centre of the park, before linking up with the brook downstream.

The leat also helps dissipate light flooding from the brook and the parallel path, although it can't cope with severe flooding that occurs occasionally.

The working party also met representatives from the council who explained the current climbing frame is to be dismantled as some of the wood is rotten and has basically come to the end of its shelf life.

It is not intended to replace the frame - but they are considering more nature related alternatives for the space.
